Get to Know Your New Co-op Trustees

David Coons - District 2

David Coons resides in Yorkshire and is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Bluffton University. As a trustee, David has actively engaged in courses aimed at improving the fundamental knowledge and skills essential for cooperative directors, earning credentials such as Credentialed Cooperative Director, Board Leadership Certificate, and Director Gold Credential. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have five children.

For 11 years, David has been a member of Darke REC. Active in the community, David serves in various capacities, including ushering at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, acting as treasurer for Versailles Cub Scout Pack 79, and participating as a member of the Versailles Area Pride & Progress Association, a life member of Versailles FFA
Alumni, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

David’s background as an agribusiness account executive at Phelan Insurance Agency and in leadership roles in agricultural committees has brought a wealth of experience to his role on the DREC Board of Trustees since 2018. His commitment to DREC is rooted in delivering affordable, safe, and reliable power, aligned with a vision
for embracing future challenges.

Stephen Vanzant - District 6

Stephen Vanzant resides in New Paris and is a graduate of The Ohio State University School of Agriculture. Since being elected as a trustee in 2018, he has pursued courses designed to enhance the essential knowledge and skills required of cooperative directors. Currently, he is striving to obtain the Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate. Stephen and his wife, Sharon, are members of Christ United Church in Richmond, Indiana.

For 38 years, Stephen has been a dedicated member of Darke Rural Electric Cooperative. Stephen’s commitment to the agricultural community is evident through his service, including 11 years on the board of directors of the Ohio Corn Marketing Program and six years on the U.S. Grains Council. Previously, he acted as a member of the Pork Festival Board in Preble County.

Stephen actively engages in farming across Preble and Darke counties, as well as Wayne County, Indiana. In 2019, he retired after an 18-year tenure as a crop insurance consultant for Diversified Services Agency. Stephen’s primary goal is to maintain DREC’s emphasis on reliability. Additionally, he aims to encourage DREC’s community involvement.
